The Key West Police Department’s Mounted Patrol participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life this year. Fitting in with the theme “Rodeo Roundup for a Cure,” the equestrian unit, comprised of Lt. Alan Newby with the Key West Police Department and Jeff Brown, programs assistant with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, opened the event by leading the volunteer walkers around the first lap of the event. Lt. Newby and his horse Leo recently completed a 50-hour horse and rider course in Ocala, Florida through the Southern Police Institute. Leo, a five-year-old Arabian Appaloosa Gelding, is the Mounted Patrol’s youngest horse.
