Repetitive training for the Mounted Officers and their horses is crucial for them to perform their duties safely and effectively.  We are fortunate that the Unit’s lead instructor, Tammy Clark, is not only a Key West Police Auxiliary Officer, but also certified by  the Southern Police Institute - University of Louisville, KY to train Mounted Officers and their horses.

Candidate Officers to the Mounted Unit must first successfully complete the local 40-hour training and assessment program before they will be considered for appointment to the Unit.  Once appointed and depending on the individual needs of the new Mounted Officer, he/she may then be sent to the next level of training.  Training does not stop there, however, as it is a continual process.

Training for the horses include such things as exposing them to sudden loud noises, gunshots, police sirens, waving flags, costumes, objects flying through the air, smoke and fire.  Mounted Officers and their horses are trained how to safely navigate through vehicle traffic and other obstacles.  The Officer and his/her Mount learn how to control and move large crowds of people, that would otherwise require 10 Officers on the ground.  Officers learn how to subdue, search and handcuff an individual all while staying on their horses.
